Dear Parents,
Welcome to Fourth Grade! This year the students will be expanding on many of the concepts they have learned in previous grades, as well as learning new information. This syllabus should assist you and your child with the expectations of Fourth Grade.
Home School Communication
Each day the students complete their agenda. Daily, please review this agenda with your child. It will help your child remember what he/she has done throughout the day as well as inform you of events in the near future. I also review every log each morning; therefore, if there is anything important you need to inform me of; this is the best place to write a note.
Throughout the year, please access www.lmlacros.weebly.com for additional information.
Although I would be happy to meet with any parent to discuss problems or concerns, I would appreciate setting up an appointment time to be sure I can accommodate your schedule, as there may be a conflict with my other after school obligations. Please contact me at 285 – 8724, e-mail me at [email protected] , or message me on class dojo.
Class dojo and email are the best ways to communicate with me.
Mini-Economy
As part of the Social Studies Curriculum, the fourth grade students will be participating in a Mini-Economy throughout the school year with their classroom jobs. The students will earn, save, and spend money at our school store. As they participate in this activity, they will learn to make responsible decisions and be responsible for their own behavior.
Homework
I believe that homework can benefit our 4th grade students in many ways. Homework can help students develop good study habits and organizational skills, develop self-discipline and independence, develop a sense of responsibility and accountability, practice and reinforce skills and concepts learned in the classroom, and provide a communication link between home and school.
That being said, this year, after doing some research for my Master’s degree, I plan to move away from traditional “worksheet” based homework. I plan to engage students in higher thinking with their homework. I want students excited to do their homework, rather than view it as a chore. More information about homework will come in the first few weeks of school after the students get settled in.
Remember, it’s not about doing it perfect. It’s about practice!! Practice makes progress!
If a student is absent, they will have as many days as they were absent to make up work. I am flexible and understand that emergencies arise during the school year. Just let me know!
Fun Friday
With the completion of class work, homework, and overall good behavior for the week, students will earn Fun Friday. This is a reward each Friday where students will earn incentives such as extra recess, a movie and popcorn party, etc. Students will not be able to participate if they have missing homework, class work, or bad behavior that week.
Grading Scale
4 Advanced = 95% - 100% (must demonstrate above grade level work)
3 Proficient = 75% - 94% (at grade level, can work independently on most tasks)
2 Partially Proficient = 60% - 74% (below grade level, support provided)
1 Not Proficient = 59% and below (significantly below grade level, intense support provided)
Students are assessed using a standards based approach; we do not use letter grades for daily assignments, homework projects, tests, quizzes, etc. Students are given a percentage and a proficiency level on all graded work; not all assignments are graded and entered into the students’ final report card.
Field Trips
There will be two field trips this year. At this time, field trips have not been scheduled; more information will be provided as soon as they are. In order to be a parent chaperone you must have a completed and approved Child Protection Volunteer Form on file. These forms are available in the main office. Please be sure to turn in money and permission slips by the due date. These experiences will provide us with a hands-on approach to our learning. More information regarding our field trips will be sent home as plans are confirmed.
Birthday Celebrations
We love to recognize and celebrate your sons/daughters birthdays. All birthdays will continue to be announced and recognized on V-TV every week. However, we ask that you not send in any food for birthdays. We have an increasing amount of food allergies to nuts, gluten, eggs, milk in every classroom as well as other health concerns and a school wide commitment for a healthier environment. Instead of food, you might want to send a trinket, pencils, come in and read to the class, donate a book or game to your child’s classroom. More ideas will be forwarded as they are suggested.
Snack
Each day, due to our late lunch of 12:10-12:55, students may bring in a healthy snack. I also encourage students to bring in a water bottle every day. Please do not send in any nuts due to allergies in the building and classroom.
I look forward to a wonderful year!
